1964 als Museum of History and Technology in einem der letzten von McKim, Mead & White entworfenen Gebäude eröffnet, zeichnet dieses Smithsonian-Museum anhand von mehr als 1,7 Millionen Objekten die US-amerikanische Geschichte nach. Herzstück der Sammlung ist das originale Star-Spangled Banner – jene rund 9 mal 10 Meter große Garnisonsflagge, die Francis Scott Key zu seiner Hymne inspirierte. Sie wird in einem abgedunkelten, klimatisierten Raum direkt am fünfstöckigen, lichtdurchfluteten Atrium präsentiert. Zu den weiteren Höhepunkten zählen die Inaugurationskleider der First Ladies, die historische Bartheke aus Greensboro, die Dampflokomotive John Bull von 1831 sowie Ikonen der Popkultur im Bereich Entertainment Nation. Der Eintritt ist frei, ein Ticket ist nicht erforderlich.
