Das Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art vereint zwei miteinander verbundene Gebäude an der National Mall: die 1923 eröffnete Freer Gallery of Art – ein von Charles A. Platt entworfener Palazzo aus rosa Granit im Stil der italienischen Renaissance – und die 1987 eröffnete, unterirdisch zugängliche Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. Gemeinsam beherbergen sie rund 45.000 Objekte, von neolithischen Jaden über chinesische und japanische Malerei bis hin zu koreanischer Keramik, islamischen Handschriften und südasiatischer Bildhauerkunst. Die Freer Gallery besitzt zudem die weltweit größte Sammlung an Werken von James McNeill Whistler, darunter sein schimmernder, blau-goldener Peacock Room, der dauerhaft installiert ist und niemals verliehen wird. Der Eintritt ist stets frei und erfordert kein Ticket.
