Das National Air and Space Museum der Smithsonian Institution beherbergt die weltweit bedeutendste Sammlung historischer Luft- und Raumfahrtexponate – vom Wright Flyer aus dem Jahr 1903 und der Spirit of St. Louis über die Bell X-1 bis hin zu John Glenns Kapsel Friendship 7 und dem Kommandomodul Columbia der Apollo-11-Mission. Der 1976 von Gyo Obata entworfene Bau – vier marmorverkleidete Kuben, verbunden durch lichtdurchflutete Glasatrien – erstrahlt nach einer achtjährigen, rund 360 Millionen Dollar teuren Generalsanierung in neuem Glanz: Die Fassade wurde komplett erneuert, sämtliche 20 Galerien von Grund auf neu gestaltet und ein neuer Säuleneingang am Jefferson Drive geschaffen. Am 1. Juli 2026, dem 50. Geburtstag des Hauses, öffneten fünf neukonzipierte Ausstellungsbereiche ihre Türen, darunter TEXTRON How Things Fly und das neue Flight and the Arts Center. Im Herbst 2026 vollenden die beiden letzten Galerien, At Home in Space und Modern Military Aviation, das Großprojekt.
