Inaugurat el 1910 com el primer edifici de la Smithsonian concebut exclusivament per a les col·leccions nacionals, aquest emblemàtic edifici Beaux-Arts situat al National Mall acull més de 148 milions d'espècimens i objectes històrics repartits en set departaments de recerca. A la rotonda coronada per la cúpula, els visitants es troben amb Henry, un elefant africà de sabana dissecat, abans de continuar el recorregut cap al Hope Diamond, un Tyrannosaurus en ple combat amb un Triceratops, una balena franca de prop de 14 metres i 274 mamífers naturalitzats. Darrere de les sales d'exposició, centenars de científics investiguen des de meteorits fins als orígens de la humanitat. L'entrada és gratuïta i no cal reservar tiquet.
