Inaugurat el 1964 com a Museum of History and Technology en un dels últims edificis projectats per McKim, Mead & White, aquest museu de la Smithsonian conserva més d'1,7 milions de peces que recorren la trajectòria històrica dels Estats Units. La seva joia principal és l'original de la Star-Spangled Banner —la bandera de guarnició d'uns 9 per 10 metres que va inspirar Francis Scott Key—, exhibida en una sala amb llum tènue i climatitzada al costat d'un atri de cinc plantes il·luminat per una claraboia. Entre altres tresors s'hi troben els vestits inaugurals de les primeres dames, el taulell de menjador de Greensboro, la locomotora John Bull de 1831 i peces icòniques de la cultura popular a Entertainment Nation. L'entrada és gratuïta i no cal reservar tiquet.
