Inaugurat el 1974 a partir de la donació d'unes 6.000 obres de l'industrial Joseph H. Hirshhorn, el Hirshhorn és el museu d'art modern i contemporani de la Smithsonian. L'edifici de Gordon Bunshaft és un cilindre buit de formigó d'uns 70 metres de diàmetre, elevat sobre quatre pilars massissos damunt d'un pati amb font, que acull tres plantes de sales d'exposició disposades en anells concèntrics. La col·lecció abasta des de Rodin, Brancusi, Matisse i Hopper fins a Pollock, Rothko i de Kooning, arribant a creadors actuals; aquest fons s'exposa en diàleg amb ambicioses mostres temporals i encàrrecs permanents de Mark Bradford, Barbara Kruger i Laurie Anderson. El Sculpture Garden contigu està tancat des del 2023 per un projecte de remodelació signat per Hiroshi Sugimoto, i la seva reobertura està prevista per al 31 d'octubre de 2026.
