Creada per a la nació el 1937 per una resolució del Congrés i finançada pel mecenatge d'Andrew W. Mellon, la National Gallery of Art s'estén al llarg de tres espais interconnectats. El West Building (1941), una joia neoclàssica coronada per una cúpula obra de John Russell Pope, acull art europeu i nord-americà des de l'edat mitjana fins a finals del segle XIX; entre les seves peces destaca Ginevra de' Benci de Leonardo da Vinci —l'única pintura de l'artista a tot el continent americà—, juntament amb obres de Raphael, Vermeer, Rembrandt, Monet i van Gogh. L'East Building (1978), dissenyat per I. M. Pei amb línies i angles pronunciats, està dedicat a l'art modern i contemporani, amb un mòbil monumental de Calder a l'atri i sales a les torres consagrades a Calder i Rothko. A l'altra banda del carrer 7th Street, l'Sculpture Garden, d'unes 2,5 hectàrees, envolta una font central amb creacions de Louise Bourgeois i Roy Lichtenstein, entre d'altres. L'accés ha estat gratuït des del dia de la seva inauguració.
