Basilica of San Clemente 堪稱羅馬歷史精華的縮影。現存的大教堂建於約 1100 年,直接坐落於一座 4 世紀的早期基督教大教堂之上;而這座早期教堂的基址,又曾是一座 1 世紀的羅馬宅邸——該處曾短暫用作聚會場所,隨後在 2 世紀改建為供奉波斯神祇密特拉的密特拉神殿(Mithraeum)。若再往深處探尋,甚至能見到在公元 64 年羅馬大火中損毀的共和時期地基。只需一次參觀,便能拾級而下,橫跨近兩千載未曾間斷的歲月痕跡。 單是地面上的大教堂已極具看頭:半圓形後殿內飾有精美絕倫的 12 世紀「生命之樹」鑲嵌畫,配以巧奪天工的 Cosmatesque 幾何大理石拼花地板,以及保存完好的中世紀合唱壇隔屏(schola cantorum)。然而,真正的精髓在於深入地下。4 世紀的遺址層保留了斑駁卻依然震撼的濕壁畫,信徒留下的塗鴉更是現存極早期由拉丁語轉向意大利語的文字佐證。至於更深一層的密特拉神殿,祭壇依然矗立,散發著神秘宗教專屬的壓迫感,耳邊甚至能清晰聽見地下暗流潺潺淌過。 這裡足以徹底顛覆你對羅馬的想像。層層疊疊的遺跡不僅是考古發現,更是一部實體展現後代直接建於前朝之上的建築史。這座建築自 1677 年起由愛爾蘭道明會修士悉心管理,保養極為得宜,策劃與陳列亦十分考究。
