New paintings by Torkwase Dyson drawn from her experiences as a deep-sea diver, exploring the "boundless state change of water" through distance, light, perception, and planetary transformation.
博物馆官网Dyson starts each painting with the canvas flat on the floor, letting translucent dark acrylic pool across it. Then come the fixed parts: brass brackets holding taut cotton string, dots of bright paint, shaped wooden panels. The works grow out of her years as a deep-sea diver, and the Brooklyn Rail's critic saw "a night world illuminated here and there by points of light."
There are thirteen, all made this year and smaller than her installations; The Distance Inside Us is 14 by 11 inches. You end up looking from the side as well as the front, because, as the Rail notes, the paint running over the edges tells its own story. It's a night dive on West 25th Street, minus the certification course.
The Rail called it "a tour-de-force show." The catch is scale: these are small, dark works, and a lap from the doorway misses the edges and the hidden panels. Free, at 540 West 25th Street, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm, until 24 October.
Daydreaming (2026)
A 48-inch square with two horizon strings pulled tight across it, while the paint on its edges runs loose and disorderly.
I Am with You and Without You (Tributaries)
Three joined panels showing flashes of blue in a dark void; get close to find the shaped wooden panels fixed at lower left and right.
The Distance Inside Us (2026)
The smallest work, 14 by 11 inches, with steel and brass hardware holding string over a dark painted surface, like a small window.
Interbeing Blue (2026)
Blues pushed almost incandescent with titanium white, broken by flickers of dark green and passages of rust-red.
You came for Dyson's large installations: these are thirteen wall works on an intimate scale.
