Construída em 1933 como residência de Tóquio do Príncipe Asaka Yasuhiko, esta mansão art déco foi projetada em colaboração com o artista francês Henri Rapin e conta com elementos de vidro decorativo de René Lalique. Depois de servir como residência do primeiro-ministro e casa de hóspedes do Estado, abriu ao público como museu em 1983. Uma reforma realizada em 2014 acrescentou um anexo moderno, projetado em colaboração com o fotógrafo Hiroshi Sugimoto, e os jardins incluem um jardim japonês com uma casa de chá de 1936 e esculturas ao ar livre.
