O Japan Folk Crafts Museum (Nihon Mingeikan) foi fundado em 1936 pelo filósofo e crítico Yanagi Soetsu, que cunhou o termo «mingei» (artesanato popular) para celebrar a beleza de objetos do quotidiano, produzidos anonimamente. Instalado num edifício tradicional japonês com um portão da era Meiji transferido de Tochigi, o museu reúne cerca de 17 000 peças, entre cerâmicas, têxteis, objetos lacados e trabalhos em madeira do Japão e de outros países. As galerias principais recebem exposições temporárias rotativas, acompanhadas por uma apresentação mais pequena da coleção permanente. O edifício contíguo West Building, antiga residência de Yanagi, abre ao público em dias específicos.
