O Cooper Hewitt é o único museu da Smithsonian Institution dedicado exclusivamente ao design histórico e contemporâneo, com um acervo de mais de 200.000 objetos que abrange design de produto, design gráfico, têxteis, revestimentos de parede, desenhos e mídia digital. Ocupa a Andrew Carnegie Mansion, uma residência de 64 cômodos em estilo georgiano construída em 1902, uma das primeiras casas particulares dos EUA a ter estrutura de aço e elevador de passageiros. Fundado em 1897 pelas irmãs Hewitt na Cooper Union, o museu se instalou na Carnegie Mansion em 1976 e continua sendo o único museu da Smithsonian que cobra entrada.
