Fundada por decreto real em 1752 e instalada desde a década de 1770 num palácio neoclássico da Calle de Alcalá, a Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando é simultaneamente uma academia de arte em atividade e um dos museus mais antigos de Madrid. A sua coleção abrange do século XV ao século XX, com obras-primas espanholas, italianas e flamengas, entre elas treze pinturas de Goya, o único Arcimboldo conservado em Espanha e um Agnus Dei de Zurbarán. O edifício acolhe também a Calcografía Nacional, a coleção nacional de gravuras de Goya.
