Fundado em 1867 por decreto real de Isabel II, o Museo Arqueológico Nacional (MAN) percorre a história da Península Ibérica desde a pré-história até ao início da época moderna. Partilha o seu grandioso edifício neoclássico do século XIX, projetado por Francisco Jareño, com a National Library of Spain, nas proximidades da Plaza de Colón. As suas coleções abrangem a Espanha ibérica, romana, visigótica, islâmica e cristã, além de antiguidades egípcias, do Próximo Oriente e gregas, tendo como peças emblemáticas a Dama de Elche e o Tesouro visigótico de Guarrazar. Uma importante renovação, realizada entre 2008 e 2014, modernizou as galerias e a sua apresentação cronológica.
