Fundado em 1881 e transferido em 1903 para o atual edifício neomamluco construído especialmente para o acolher, o Museum of Islamic Art reúne uma das mais vastas coleções de artefactos islâmicos do mundo. Cerca de 4.500 objetos estão expostos em 25 salas distribuídas por dois pisos, selecionados de um acervo total que ultrapassa as 100.000 peças. O espólio abrange desde a dinastia Omíada do século VII até ao Império Otomano do século XIX, incluindo trabalhos em madeira finamente esculpida, cerâmica, metalurgia, vidro, cristal, têxteis e raros manuscritos alcorânicos com caligrafia a tinta de prata. Entre as peças mais notáveis destacam-se uma chave da Ka'ba da época mamluca e têxteis com antigas inscrições cúficas. Em janeiro de 2014, um carro-bomba dirigido contra uma sede policial próxima danificou gravemente o museu; após um extenso trabalho de restauro, reabriu em 2017.
