Fundado por Auguste Mariette e inaugurado em 1902, o Museum of Egyptian Antiquities abriga mais de 120.000 artefatos que abrangem milhares de anos da civilização egípcia antiga. Seu edifício neoclássico, projetado pelo arquiteto francês Marcel Dourgnon, ocupa uma posição de destaque na Tahrir Square, no Cairo. A coleção inclui tesouros do túmulo de Tutankhamun, a Narmer Palette, estátuas dos grandes faraós, papiros, moedas e artefatos de praticamente todos os períodos da história do Egito Antigo. Embora muitas peças — incluindo as Royal Mummies e parte do acervo de Tutankhamun — tenham sido transferidas para o mais recente Grand Egyptian Museum e para o National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, o museu continua sendo um dos marcos culturais mais importantes do Cairo, com um vasto acervo remanescente. O próprio edifício integra a UNESCO Tentative List.
