O Stasi Museum ocupa o Haus 1 da antiga sede do Ministério para a Segurança do Estado da RDA, em Lichtenberg, construído em 1960/61 como sede oficial do chefe da Stasi, Erich Mielke. Inaugurado em 1990 pela associação de direitos civis ASTAK, o museu relata como o «Escudo e Espada do Partido» foi estruturado, como operava e quem trabalhava para ele. A exposição permanente «Segurança do Estado na Ditadura do SED» (State Security in the SED Dictatorship) baseia-se em arquivos, fotografias e equipamentos de vigilância da Stasi, tendo como elemento central o próprio conjunto de gabinetes de Mielke, preservado quase exatamente como ele o deixou.
