Wzniesiony w latach 1843–1855 według projektu Friedricha Augusta Stülera gmach Neues Museum po II wojnie światowej popadł w ruinę. Otwarto go ponownie w 2009 roku po renowacji przeprowadzonej przez Davida Chipperfielda, która w czytelny sposób eksponuje wojenne blizny budynku. Wewnątrz mieszczą się Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection ze słynnym popiersiem królowej Nefretete oraz Museum of Prehistory and Early History, prezentujące m.in. Berliński Złoty Kapelusz czy zabytki trojańskie odkryte przez Schliemanna. Muzeum stanowi część kompleksu Museum Island, wpisanego na listę światowego dziedzictwa UNESCO.
