Wzniesiony w latach 1877–1881 według projektu Martina Gropiusa i Heino Schmiedena jako berlińskie muzeum sztuki użytkowej, Gropius Bau został poważnie zniszczony w 1945 roku i po odbudowie otwarty na nowo w 1981 roku. Dziś instytucją zarządza Berliner Festspiele. Miejsce to nie posiada stałej kolekcji – organizuje natomiast monumentalne wystawy czasowe i performanse współczesnych artystów. Na parterze mieści się BAUBAU projektu Kerstin Brätsch – bezpłatna przestrzeń twórczej zabawy dla dzieci.
