L'edificio principale del Wien Museum su Karlsplatz, progettato da Oswald Haerdtl negli anni Cinquanta, ha riaperto il 6 dicembre 2023 dopo un intervento di ristrutturazione e ampliamento firmato da Certov, Winkler + Ruck, che ha aggiunto due piani e un nuovo padiglione d'ingresso. L'esposizione permanente a ingresso libero, «Wien. Meine Geschichte», ripercorre la storia di Vienna su tre piani attraverso 1.700 oggetti, dai primi insediamenti fino ai giorni nostri. Tra i pezzi forti figurano il ritratto di Emilie Flöge dipinto da Gustav Klimt nel 1902, un modello di cinque metri del St. Stephen's Cathedral e Poldi, la balena del Prater lunga dieci metri. Le mostre temporanee occupano l'ultimo piano, dove una caffetteria si apre su una terrazza ad accesso gratuito con vista sul centro storico.
