Le mumok est le plus grand musée d'art moderne et contemporain d'Autriche, rassemblant près de 12 500 œuvres d'environ 1 600 artistes. Sa collection s'est développée à partir des premières acquisitions de 1959, enrichie par la Ludwig Collection, la Hahn Collection et un ensemble exhaustif consacré à l'actionnisme viennois, le Pop Art, Fluxus et le Nouveau Réalisme figurant parmi ses points forts. Depuis 2001, il occupe un cube habillé de lave basaltique conçu par Ortner & Ortner au sein du MuseumsQuartier, offrant environ 4 800 m² d'espaces d'exposition répartis sur plusieurs niveaux.
