Fondé en 1961 autour du thème « Art in Life », le Suntory Museum of Art conserve quelque 3 000 œuvres d’art japonais – objets en laque, céramiques, verreries, textiles teints et peintures –, dont un trésor national ainsi que de nombreux biens culturels importants et objets d’art importants. Depuis 2007, il occupe un espace conçu par Kengo Kuma au troisième étage de Tokyo Midtown Galleria, à Roppongi, après avoir été installé à Marunouchi puis à Akasaka. Le musée a rouvert en 2020 au terme de travaux de rénovation. Plutôt qu’une présentation permanente, il propose un programme renouvelé d’expositions temporaires thématiques, élaborées à partir de ses propres collections et de prêts extérieurs.
