Ouvert en 2016 dans le quartier de Ryogoku, où Katsushika Hokusai a vécu la majeure partie de sa vie, ce musée conserve plus de 1 800 peintures, esquisses, estampes et objets personnels de l’artiste. Conçu par l’architecte Kazuyo Sejima, lauréate du prix Pritzker, son bâtiment anguleux aux façades revêtues de miroirs s’inscrit dans le paysage urbain. La galerie permanente « AURORA », au 4e étage, retrace la vie et les techniques de Hokusai à l’aide de reproductions en haute définition à l’échelle 1:1 et d’un atelier reconstitué. Des expositions temporaires présentent régulièrement des œuvres originales issues des collections.
