Fondé en 1980 autour de la collection privée de l’homme d’affaires Seizo Ōta V, le Ōta Memorial Museum of Art abrite l’une des plus belles collections japonaises d’estampes ukiyo-e sur bois : plus de 12 000 œuvres, couvrant des artistes tels qu’Utamaro, Hokusai et Hiroshige, entre autres. À deux pas de la rue Takeshita, à Harajuku, le musée ne propose pas d’exposition permanente ; il organise à la place un programme renouvelé d’expositions thématiques, environ tous les un à deux mois. Les tarifs et conditions d’accès varient selon l’exposition, et le musée ferme plusieurs jours entre deux présentations pour renouveler l’accrochage.
