Le Japan Folk Crafts Museum (Nihon Mingeikan) a été fondé en 1936 par le philosophe et critique Yanagi Soetsu, qui a forgé le terme « mingei » (artisanat populaire) pour célébrer la beauté des objets du quotidien, fabriqués anonymement. Installé dans un bâtiment japonais traditionnel doté d’une porte de l’ère Meiji déplacée depuis Tochigi, le musée abrite quelque 17 000 œuvres, parmi lesquelles des céramiques, des textiles, des pièces en laque et des ouvrages en bois provenant du Japon et d’ailleurs. Des expositions temporaires se succèdent dans les galeries principales, aux côtés d’une présentation plus restreinte de la collection permanente. Le bâtiment attenant, West Building, ancienne résidence de Yanagi, est ouvert au public certains jours seulement.
