Conçu par Hayao Miyazaki, réalisateur du Studio Ghibli, comme un « musée où l’on se perd » aux allures de labyrinthe, ce bâtiment de Mitaka, situé près du parc d’Inokashira, n’impose aucun parcours et réaménage régulièrement ses espaces. Parmi les temps forts figurent les salles « Where a Film Is Born », qui reconstituent l’atelier d’un animateur, le Saturn Theater, où est projeté un court métrage original introuvable ailleurs, le Cat Bus du rez-de-chaussée pour les enfants et un Robot Soldier de cinq mètres, tiré du Château dans le ciel, qui veille sur le jardin en toiture. Les billets doivent être achetés à l’avance pour une date et un créneau précis – aucune vente n’a lieu sur place.
