Ouvert en 2014 à Yongsan, à côté du National Museum of Korea, le National Hangeul Museum retrace l’histoire du hangeul — l’écriture coréenne conçue par le roi Sejong le Grand en 1443 — à travers la calligraphie, des manuscrits historiques et des galeries interactives. Sa collection, qui compte environ 90 000 objets, retrace l’invention de l’alphabet, sa répression sous la domination coloniale et son rayonnement mondial actuel. Elle comprend également un Children's Museum dédié ainsi qu’un Hangeul Learning Center. Le 1er février 2025, un incendie survenu pendant les travaux d’agrandissement a gravement endommagé le bâtiment. Le musée est fermé pour des travaux de rénovation structurelle et d’agrandissement, et sa réouverture est prévue en octobre 2028. Dans l’intervalle, les expositions et les programmes éducatifs se poursuivent dans des lieux partenaires autour de Séoul.
