Aménagé dans l'ancien Real Hospicio de San Fernando, un hospice du XVIIIe siècle conçu par Pedro de Ribera, ce musée municipal gratuit retrace l'essor de Madrid, d'une modeste bourgade à une grande capitale européenne. Riche de plus de 60 000 pièces, sa collection présente notamment l'Alegoría de la Villa de Madrid de Goya ainsi que la célèbre maquette de la ville réalisée en 1830 par León Gil de Palacio. Le monumental portail en pierre sculptée, chef-d'œuvre du baroque churrigueresque madrilène, subsiste de l'hospice d'origine inauguré en 1722.
