CaixaForum Madrid occupe une ancienne centrale électrique datant de 1899 sur le Paseo del Prado, transformée entre 2001 et 2007 par les architectes suisses Herzog & de Meuron en un centre culturel semblant flotter au-dessus de la place. Son parvis est dominé par le jardin vertical conçu par Patrick Blanc, l'un des murs végétaux les plus photographiés de Madrid. Dépourvu de collection permanente, le lieu propose une programmation rythmée de grandes expositions temporaires et itinérantes consacrées à l'art, à l'archéologie, à l'histoire et à la science, complétée par des concerts, des conférences et des activités pour les familles. Il se trouve au cœur du Paseo del Arte madrilène, à quelques pas des musées Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza et Reina Sofia.
