Le 55 Mount Vernon Street compte parmi les quatre maisons mitoyennes en brique attribuées à Charles Bulfinch, érigées en 1804 par l'homme politique Jonathan Mason pour ses filles. Demeure la mieux préservée de l'ensemble, elle arbore un style fédéral agrémenté d'un portique néo-grec ajouté dans les années 1830. Le Dr Arthur Nichols et son épouse Elizabeth en firent l'acquisition en 1885, et leur fille aînée, Rose Standish Nichols — paysagiste, autrice, suffragiste et pacifiste —, y vécut jusqu'à sa disparition en 1960, la léguant pour qu'elle devienne un musée ouvert au public en 1961. Les pièces d'époque reflètent les goûts singuliers de la famille : on y découvre du mobilier bostonien, des tapisseries flamandes, des céramiques chinoises ainsi qu'un buste en bronze doré représentant la Victoire par Augustus Saint-Gaudens, côtoyant des objets du quotidien comme une radio de 1936. La maison se découvre exclusivement dans le cadre d'une visite guidée et s'étend sur trois étages sans ascenseur.
