Fondé en 1936 sous le nom de Boston Museum of Modern Art, l'ICA compte parmi les plus anciennes institutions d'art contemporain des États-Unis et a pris ses nouveaux quartiers sur le front de mer de Seaport en 2006. Diller Scofidio + Renfro a imaginé cet édifice de 6 000 m² comme un ruban plié : le Boston Harborwalk s'élève pour former les gradins publics du Jill Medvedow Grandstand, avant de se prolonger à l'intérieur sous la forme du plancher et du plafond du théâtre, tandis que la « boîte de galeries » du dernier étage s'avance en porte-à-faux jusqu'au bord de l'eau, portée par quatre massives poutres en treillis. Nichée sous ce spectaculaire surplomb, la Poss Family Mediatheque descend en gradins vers le port. L'institution ne présente pas de collection permanente : ses espaces vivent au rythme d'expositions temporaires et de nouvelles commandes. L'ICA gère également le Watershed, une annexe saisonnière gratuite aménagée dans d'anciens chantiers navals d'East Boston, accessible en ferry depuis le musée.
