Le Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts est le seul bâtiment d'Amérique du Nord conçu par l'architecte d'origine suisse Le Corbusier, en collaboration avec l'architecte chilien Guillermo Jullian de la Fuente ; il a ouvert ses portes en 1963. Une rampe en béton en forme de S élève les visiteurs depuis Quincy Street et les guide à travers le troisième étage, le long des baies vitrées des ateliers — concrétisant ainsi l'ambition de Le Corbusier d'une « synthèse des arts » intégrée à la circulation. Aujourd'hui, le Carpenter Center propose une programmation d'art contemporain au sein de ses galeries Level 1, Level 3 et Sert Gallery, rythmée par des commandes, des publications, des événements publics et des résidences, tous gratuits et ouverts à tous. Il partage l'édifice avec le Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies de Harvard ainsi qu'avec la Harvard Film Archive.
