Mera, Don y Jason Rubell llevan coleccionando arte contemporáneo desde 1964. En 2022 llevaron parte de sus fondos a Washington con la apertura de casi 3000 metros cuadrados de salas expositivas en el barrio de Southwest. El espacio ocupa la antigua Randall Junior High School, una histórica escuela pública para la comunidad negra construida en 1906 y clausurada en 1978. La familia Rubell adquirió el inmueble a la Corcoran Gallery of Art en 2010 y encargó al estudio Beyer Blinder Belle desnudar las antiguas aulas para dejar a la vista el ladrillo, el acero y los amplios ventanales. Marvin Gaye fue alumno de este centro, y la muestra inaugural, What's Going On, tomó su título del célebre tema del cantante. El museo renueva sus salas prácticamente por completo cada año, por lo que rara vez se expone lo mismo dos veces; además, el acceso es gratuito para quienes presenten un documento de identidad de DC.
