Duncan Phillips inauguró este museo en su propia residencia de Dupont Circle en 1921, cinco años antes de que Nueva York contara con algo similar, y esa escala íntima y doméstica jamás se perdió. Cerca de 6000 obras cuelgan en salas que aún conservan la calidez de un hogar —El Greco junto a Cézanne, Bonnard al lado de Rothko—, dispuestas para suscitar diálogos a través de los siglos en lugar de imponer un recorrido cronológico. La gran joya de la colección es El almuerzo de los remeros de Renoir, aunque son la Rothko Room y la cámara de cera de abejas de Wolfgang Laib las que suelen dejar una huella imborrable en el visitante. Una ampliación en 1960 y el Sant Building en 2006, construido en gran parte bajo tierra, sumaron espacio sin alterar el encanto original de la mansión.
