Conocido como MOMAT, fue el primer museo nacional de arte de Japón. Abrió sus puertas en 1952 y, en 1969, se trasladó al edificio actual, diseñado por Yoshiro Taniguchi, en el parque Kitanomaru. Su colección, que reúne más de 13.000 obras, abarca pintura, grabado, escultura, fotografía y caligrafía japonesas e internacionales desde la era Meiji hasta nuestros días. Se presenta mediante muestras rotativas de la "MOMAT Collection", junto con exposiciones temporales. El museo se encuentra junto al foso del Palacio Imperial, a pocos minutos a pie de la estación Takebashi.
