Instalado en el Hôtel Carnavalet y en el contiguo Hôtel Le Peletier de Saint Fargeau, es el más antiguo de los museos de la Ciudad de Paris, abierto desde 1880 y renacido tras una renovación llevada a cabo entre 2016 y 2021. Su colección de unos 625.000 objetos abarca desde piraguas prehistóricas y monedas galas hasta reliquias de la Revolución Francesa, fachadas de tiendas Art Nouveau y el dormitorio reconstruido de Marcel Proust. Cuarenta salas y galerías de época narran la historia de Paris a través de las elegantes mansiones del Marais de los siglos XVI y XVII. El acceso a la colección permanente es gratuito.
