Fundado en 1977 por la curadora Marcia Tucker, el New Museum está dedicado al "arte nuevo y las ideas nuevas", apostando por artistas vivos antes de que el gran público los descubra. Su emblemática sede, un conjunto de cajas blancas desalineadas diseñado por el estudio japonés SANAA, abrió sus puertas en el Bowery en 2007 y fue aclamada como un hito de la arquitectura contemporánea. En marzo de 2026 el museo reabrió con una ampliación diseñada por OMA que duplicó su espacio de galerías, añadiendo una escalera escultórica en el atrio, una plaza pública y una Sky Room en el séptimo piso. Al ser una institución sin colección propia, organiza ambiciosas exposiciones itinerantes y la recurrente New Museum Triennial de artistas emergentes.
