Fundado en 1884, el Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga (MNAA) ocupa el Palacio Alvor-Pombal, del siglo XVII, en la Rua das Janelas Verdes, con vistas al Tajo. Su colección, formada por unas 40.000 obras, abarca pintura y escultura portuguesas y europeas, piezas de orfebrería y platería, mobiliario, cerámica, textiles y arte relacionado con los Descubrimientos portugueses. El museo cerró al público el 29 de septiembre de 2025 para acometer obras de renovación en el marco del Plan de Recuperación y Resiliencia de Portugal. No se ha anunciado una fecha de reapertura; entretanto, partes de su colección se muestran en museos colaboradores de todo el país.
