Construida entre 1859 y 1860 según el diseño de Edward Clarke Cabot, la Gibson House fue una de las primeras residencias erigidas en los terrenos recién ganados a las marismas de Back Bay: una casa adosada de estilo neorrenacentista italiano en arenisca marrón y ladrillo rojo. Tres generaciones de la familia Gibson y su personal de servicio habitaron el 137 Beacon Street entre 1859 y 1954. El último de ellos, Charles Hammond Gibson Jr., legó la vivienda con todo su contenido para convertirla en museo, abriendo sus puertas en 1957. El resultado es un interior victoriano de una integridad excepcional, con papeles pintados, textiles, muebles y objetos cotidianos originales preservados a lo largo de cinco plantas.
