El 55 de Mount Vernon Street es una de las cuatro casas adosadas de ladrillo atribuidas a Charles Bulfinch y construidas en 1804 por el político Jonathan Mason para sus hijas. Es la mejor conservada del conjunto, de estilo federal con un pórtico neogriego añadido en la década de 1830. El doctor Arthur Nichols y su esposa Elizabeth adquirieron la residencia en 1885, y su primogénita, Rose Standish Nichols —paisajista, escritora, sufragista y pacifista—, residió en ella hasta su muerte en 1960, legándola para que abriera al público como museo en 1961.
