Το New Museum ιδρύθηκε το 1977 από την επιμελήτρια Marcia Tucker και είναι αφιερωμένο στη «νέα τέχνη και τις νέες ιδέες», υποστηρίζοντας εν ζωή καλλιτέχνες πριν αυτοί αναγνωριστούν από το ευρύ κοινό. Το εμβληματικό κτήριο του μουσείου, μια στοίβα από λευκά κουτιά σε ασύμμετρη διάταξη σχεδιασμένη από την ιαπωνική εταιρεία SANAA, άνοιξε τις πύλες του στην Bowery το 2007 και αναδείχθηκε ως τοπόσημο της σύγχρονης αρχιτεκτονικής. Τον Μάρτιο του 2026 το μουσείο άνοιξε εκ νέου με μια επέκταση σχεδιασμένη από την OMA, η οποία διπλασίασε τον εκθεσιακό χώρο, προσθέτοντας μια γλυπτική κλιμακοστάσια-αίθριο, μια δημόσια πλατεία και ένα Sky Room στον έβδομο όροφο.
