Das 1993 in unmittelbarer Nähe der National Mall eröffnete United States Holocaust Memorial Museum ist die offizielle Gedenkstätte und das lebendige Museum der USA für die sechs Millionen jüdischen Menschen sowie Millionen weiterer Opfer der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung. Die dreistöckige Dauerausstellung zeichnet die Geschichte des Holocaust chronologisch von der nationalsozialistischen Machtergreifung 1933 bis zur Befreiung und ihren Nachwirkungen nach – anhand von mehr als 900 Originalobjekten, historischem Filmmaterial und aufgezeichneten Zeitzeugenberichten. Das von James Ingo Freed entworfene Gebäude wirkt bewusst beunruhigend: Details aus Backstein, Stahl und Glas erinnern an die Lagerarchitektur und münden in der sechseckigen Hall of Remembrance mit ihrer ewigen Flamme. Der Eintritt ist frei. Zudem bietet das Museum eine Ausstellung für Kinder, wechselnde Installationen sowie ein bedeutendes Programm zur Erforschung und Verhütung von Völkermorden.
