1898 von Joseph Maria Olbrich als architektonisches Manifest der Künstlervereinigung Vienna Secession erbaut, trägt der weiße Kubus unter seiner markanten Lorbeerblattkuppel bis heute die Devise »Der Zeit ihre Kunst, der Kunst ihre Freiheit«. Heute fungiert das Haus als von Kunstschaffenden geleitete Institution für internationale zeitgenössische Kunst mit wechselnden Einzelausstellungen. Im Untergeschoss ist Gustav Klimts Beethovenfries (1902) dauerhaft zu sehen.
