Österreichs größtes Kunstmuseum wurde 1891 in einem prachtvollen Ringstraßenbau von Gottfried Semper und Karl von Hasenauer eröffnet – direkt gegenüber seinem Zwillingsbau, dem Naturhistorischen Museum am Maria-Theresien-Platz. Es beherbergt die kaiserlichen Sammlungen der Habsburger: eine Gemäldegalerie mit der weltweit größten Werkgruppe von Pieter Bruegel dem Älteren neben Raffael, Tizian, Vermeer, Rubens und Velázquez, die Kunstkammer mit Cellinis berühmter Saliera sowie ägyptische, vorderasiatische, griechische und römische Antiken. Schon das Kuppelcafé unter der prunkvollen Decke ist ein Erlebnis für sich.
