Zwischen 1869 und 1875 von Architekt Henri Parent als Wohnsitz des Bankiers und Sammlers Édouard André und der Gesellschaftsmalerin Nélie Jacquemart erbaut, wurde das Palais dem Institut de France vermacht und 1913 als Museum eröffnet. In den prunkvoll ausgestatteten Räumen sind Meisterwerke der italienischen Renaissance von Botticelli, Mantegna, Uccello und Bellini zu sehen, ergänzt durch französische Gemälde des 18. Jahrhunderts sowie flämische Werke von Rembrandt und Frans Hals. Das Italienische Museum, eine von Tiepolo mit Fresken ausgestattete Prunktreppe und ein lichtdurchflutetes Winterhaus lassen die Atmosphäre einer großen Pariser Residenz des 19. Jahrhunderts wiedererstehen.
