1984 vom Juwelier Cartier gegründet, zählt sie zu den bedeutendsten privaten Institutionen für zeitgenössische Kunst in Frankreich und verfügt über eine Sammlung von mehr als 1.500 Werken von über 350 Künstlerinnen und Künstlern. Im Oktober 2025 zog sie aus Jean Nouvels gefeiertem Glaspavillon am Boulevard Raspail in ein weitläufiges neues Haus gegenüber dem Louvre – erneut von Nouvel gestaltet – im denkmalgeschützten ehemaligen Grands Magasins du Louvre. Ihr Programm setzt sich für etablierte wie aufstrebende Künstlerinnen und Künstler aus den Bereichen Kunst, Architektur, Fotografie, Design und Wissenschaft ein; drei verglaste Dachöffnungen und mobile Galerien durchfluten rund 8.400 m² Ausstellungsfläche mit Licht.
