Instal·lat a l’Aljube, un edifici que durant bona part de la seva història va ser una presó i que entre 1928 i 1965 va funcionar com a presó política, el museu està dedicat a la lluita contra la dictadura portuguesa de 1926 a 1974. Les plantes recorren la censura, la policia política PIDE, els interrogatoris i la tortura, les minúscules cel·les d’aïllament conegudes com a «curros», la lluita anticolonial i la Revolució del 25 d’abril de 1974. Al soterrani s’hi poden veure restes arqueològiques dels períodes romà i islàmic, i la planta superior ofereix vistes sobre el riu.
