Fundat el 1911, quan la col·lecció de l’antic Museu Nacional de Belas-Artes es va dividir en dues, el Museu do Chiado conserva la col·lecció nacional portuguesa d’art des de 1850 fins avui, amb diverses peces considerades tresors nacionals. Ocupa una part de l’antic Convent de São Francisco, al Chiado, reformat i reobert el 1994. El muntatge de llarga durada «Impressões Digitais» posa en diàleg pintura, escultura, fotografia, instal·lació i vídeo, al costat d’un programa canviant d’exposicions temporals a les seves galeries del carrer Rua Serpa Pinto i del carrer Rua Capelo.
