Inaugurat el 1998 en una antiga estació de bombeig del servei d’aigües de Lisboa, al Largo do Chafariz de Dentro, el Museu do Fado recorre la història del fado, des dels seus orígens lisboetes al segle XIX fins avui. L’exposició permanent interactiva aborda la presència del fado als escenaris, la ràdio, el cinema i la televisió; l’evolució de la guitarra portuguesa; l’atmosfera de les cases de fado, i les vides de centenars d’intèrprets, amb punts d’escolta distribuïts per tot el recorregut. Pintures com O Fado, de José Malhoa, conviuen amb instruments, vestits, partitures i trofeus. El museu també gestiona un arxiu sonor, un centre de documentació i una escola de guitarra portuguesa.
