On Orsay's own preview image, a line from Monet's 1884 letter to Théodore Duret runs in white capitals across the old station front, above the Seine: "C'est toute une étude nouvelle pour moi que ce pays." Holzer projects lines like it, by Flaubert, Cézanne, Van Gogh and Zola, every evening from 18 to 22 October, 7pm to 11pm.
Inside, the texts come from Orsay's archive or its 1848 to 1914 period. You walk the domed galleries of history painting, naturalism and symbolism with coloured LED text streaming past the pictures, beside Holzer's gold and platinum-leaf paintings, much of their text redacted. New stone benches, many carved with period writing, sit across the ground floor and galleries. In a city where a terrace chair costs you an espresso, here the seat is the artwork.
The galleries are rooms 57, 58 and 60, level 2, on the €16 timed museum ticket (€12 Thursday evenings, open to 9:45pm; free under 18). The façade projections are outside, for anyone passing.
The façade projections
Look at the Seine side of the building, 18 to 22 October from 7pm to 11pm, for writing by Flaubert, Cézanne, Van Gogh and Zola projected across the old station front.
The LED in the domed galleries
A site-specific LED of coloured, moving text runs through the history painting, naturalism and symbolism galleries, its programming modelled on visitor flow and the building's past as a railway station.
The redaction paintings
Look for Holzer's gold, platinum and palladium-leaf paintings, with much of their text obscured, which change with the light off the Seine over the course of the day.
The carved stone benches
New benches carved with texts from 1848 to 1914, set on the ground floor and in the galleries, in unusual stones chosen to answer those of the museum's sculptures and pedestals.
